Beauty, Perfection and Plastic Surgery

I'm not sure if this post will offend any one but I am gonna say it anyway. And from the title, you would have guessed.

There's something very disturbing about youngsters these days. By youngsters, I mean young teenagers, youths and even adults who are in their 20s and beyond (forever young lololol).

Many months ago, 2 guy friends in their mid 20s separately told me that they wanna do plastic surgery to their face.

One wanted to do his eyelid and nose, another one had no idea yet but he wanted to do his entire face. I was super shocked when they told me because honestly, I think they look normal, average looking at the very least. I discouraged them but they continued to seek self-pity and kept saying that they are ugly and thus it's very difficult for them to be favoured by girls or by bosses at workplace.

Halfway down the conversation, I remember getting very pissed with the two separate conversation as they kept going on and on about plastic surgery and how the major deed will change their entire life after that.

That was it. I stopped trying to dissuade.

I told them it's their wish but if they were to ask me, I'm not supporting their train of thought because honestly speaking, they aren't exceptionally ugly or disfigured. Then I stopped talking because I was very angry by then lol. Angry at their mindset and angry at how they perceive themselves to be due to the lack of security within self. Angry at how they think they can solve their issues/problems with plastic surgery because of their low self esteem.

So I got over it and few months have passed by.

Fyi, plastic surgery is also known as cosmetic surgery or aesthetic surgery.

Then.

A few days ago, I was doing some online reading and came across a post by this young Singaporean teenage girl (not that bad looking) who wants to do plastic surgery too. Apparently she wants to do her nose, jaws, tummy etc and she seems very serious about it. She even claims that she does not love herself for the way she looks like currently - BUT if you were to ask me, no she's NOT ugly at all. Looks average but presentable and maybe even a little cute at certain angles. DAFUG is wrong with her?!

SO.
Hearing about all these scares the shit outta me.
I think that the definition of 'beauty' has been overrated in this vicious society.

Hi! I'm Barbie and I'm Ken! We're beautiful coz we're manufactured out of plastic in the factory.

Look here, its NOT about having a PERFECT face, shape or body. Whatever that is being portrayed in the fashion magazines, movies, tv commercials is not 100% as you see it. These "perfect-looking" people that you see are either digitally edited or enhanced with make-up with lighting set-up in the place. Same theory goes with the shape of their "perfect bodies". Its all a matter of capturing the right angles or wearing the right fit of clothing with the right accessories.

Only a handful are lucky enough to be born naturally gorgeous or handsome. In my case, I'm lucky enough to be born naturally skinny (but I have a different set of problem lol. I feel that I need to gain a bit more weight and yet I have difficulty doing that no matter how much I eat, so please farkin don't say that you envy me, fish you lol)!! I'm still happy though because I see it as a blessing. It's a matter of perspective. If I'm born chubby, I would see it as a blessing too because it means that I can cushion my fall, I can still look fashionable with proper clothings and I can even donate blood to the needy. I can also go on a diet to reduce my weight but pray tell me, how the hell can one gain weight if your metabolism is super high like Mount Everest?!! Fark that. Lol.

The media and society has really polluted many of these young minds.

I understand that insecurity can be a difficult big monster to deal with and that it especially haunts these people who have SUPER LOW SELF ESTEEM but plastic surgery shouldn't be the solution!

What's really disturbing is the fact that most of these people who do plastic surgery seem to be looking for "perfection" that is set by the standards of the media and society. These people are not disfigured or exceptionally ugly in the first place, yet they choose to conform to the expectations of something which they shouldn't even be comparing with. They believe that by doing plastic surgery, everything else will fall into place and their life will be better. I'm sorry to burst your bubbles but that's not true!

Imagine how you'd have to explain yourselves to your future spouse when they find out that you've had a "total makeover". Such things cannot be hidden. You'd have scars and many other tell tale signs. But that's besides the point, I'm more concerned with the reason behind why youths and adults are resorting to plastic surgery these days.

What if the plastic surgery goes wrong? Or what if your nose goes crooked after 20 years? Or what if... gawd... there are many what-ifs. Seriously, you wanna go through that risk of looking worst than your current presentable self?

Putting yourselves under the knife is no small matter.
But I'm not gonna go into that.

All I'll like to say is that perfection does not mean that one has to look like Barbie or Ken. Perfection does NOT equate to double eyelids, big eyes, long eyelashes, long sharp nose, dimples, tiny/pouty mouth, high cheek bones etc. If you're born with it, congratulations. If not, live with it and grow your self esteem in other areas like wits, brains, personality etc and bring out your charisma. External beauty is subjective and no point being beautiful outside when you suck bad inside.

For gods sake, please don't resort to plastic surgery for every small shitty problem that you may face in life and don't accredit the existence of those problems to your looks, face and/or body. Completely irrelevant, geddit??!

Yes I do get it that people go under the knife with the hope of becoming confident and looking better by improving their facial/body features but excuse me, what's the point of looking perfect when your insecurity doesn't go under the knife as well? If you don't even love yourself and have insecurity issues within, there's no way plastic surgery will help you. Please get that straight. You have to love and accept yourself first before expecting others to love and accept you.

One perfect example would be the late Michael Jackson.

I read up on his childhood and apparently it seems that Michael Jackson had issues within himself since young. His father used to intimidate him and say that he had a big nose. His father also enforced strict discipline on all of the Jackson 5 siblings, including Michael Jackson. These things kinda traumatized and affected him as a young kid and he eventually had his first nose job done when he accidentally broke his nose during a complex dance rehearsal. Ever since then, his facial features had gone through drastic changes.
(Oh btw his white skin is due to some condition that he was suffering from, its called vitiligo and lupus if I'm not wrong.)

We all saw Michael Jackson as the talented King of Pop, but did we see the insecurities and feelings that he faced behind that "mask" which he held on to for so many years until his death? I'm pretty sure he wasn't half as happy as most of us would have thought he was. Sad, isn't it?  :(

I think the media, schools and family members ought to play an important role in the growth of children and teenagers with regards to building their self confidence long-term. These kids grow up to become what you determine of them. You can make or break their securities & self confidence with your words and actions. The society should also intervene. Tell these youths that perfection does not exist and the definition of beauty is overrated. Plastic surgery does NOT solve problems. Plastic surgery will NOT get you to places - hardwork, determination and a bit of luck does.

Yes you may argue that good looks will get you that much wanted promotion or that boy/girl, but really, if that's the case, then EVERYBODY in the world would need plastic surgery, otherwise no one would get ever married and no one would get their chance to be the manager, the CEO or COO or whatever O in the corporate world. Lol.

Anyways.
I am very concerned about this plastic surgery phenomena because all these young people who wanna do plastic surgery all look normal with average looks and look presentable enough. I believe that they are seeking plastic surgery for the wrong reasons - due to their lack of self esteem and self believe - which is a very serious, deep rooted problem that will affect their personal lives in the long run. Their sense of logic is warped because of the way media has portrayed beauty to be. These young people have become delusional. It's RIDICULOUS.

SAY NO TO PLASTIC SURGERY!

I actually thinks that if plastic surgery is what makes them happy, then there's no point for others to get angry over this topic. You don't scold someone who put makeup everyday to cover his/her flaws, right? Plastic surgery is just another form of cosmetic/photoshop in reality.

But what disturbs me more is the low self-esteem of many that thinks that plastic surgery is the only way out. :/ It is quite sad how some people just don't see the good or find the good in themselves. There are so much more important things to do than whining about own flaws!

Say No to Plastic Surgery indeed. It's really sad to hear that more & more people are going for plastics.

I was shocked to read an article in the papers some time ago that more than 80% of Korean ladies have gone for plastic surgeries. Even in China, many have done. Congrats to those whose surgeries are a success. But what happen to those who failed?

No one is born perfect
and that shouldn't be the reason to do a plastic thing but with so much luxury in life, doing it seems so common even with so many mishaps.

Yea, I agree with you. I don't agree with such surgery too. We are born with such face, that's the gift from our parents. We should try to remain it as natural.

You said I point I never think of, regarding doing plastic surgery will not solve the problem of low self esteem. A good point.
